WASHINGTON, D.C. — Monumental Sports Network (MNMT) has used its direct-to-consumer streaming strategy to deliver a measurable, league-leading lift in fan engagement — including a 37% year-over-year jump in Washington Capitals viewership during the 2024-25 season, as reported by the network. The growth is the clearest signal yet that MNMT’s combined linear and streaming approach is reshaping how DMV sports fans consume the Capitals (NHL), Wizards (NBA), Mystics (WNBA) and Capital City Go-Go (G League).

The 37% viewership gain caps a two-year build that began in October 2023, when MNMT became one of the first wholly team-owned regional sports networks to offer a stand-alone direct-to-consumer subscription — and it has been followed by a series of industry-first product innovations.

A 2023 DTC launch built for the DMV

On October 10, 2023, Monumental Sports Network launched its direct-to-consumer subscription memberships at $19.99 per month or $199.99 annually, featuring live Capitals, Wizards and Mystics games alongside studio programming and additional DMV sports content. The product was distributed through MNMT’s app and web destinations and was further amplified in early 2024 through a multi-year distribution partnership with Synamedia on the PowerVu platform.

Wholly owned by Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE), the network has the unusual advantage of operating across a single, vertically integrated portfolio — teams, network, app, and venue — that stretches from Richmond, Virginia, to Delaware.

  • DTC launch: October 10, 2023 at $19.99/month or $199.99/year via MNMT’s app and web.
  • Rights portfolio: Washington Capitals (NHL), Wizards (NBA), Mystics (WNBA) and Capital City Go-Go (G League), plus DMV sports programming.
  • Coverage area: Six-state-plus DMV region stretching from Richmond, Virginia to Delaware.
  • Platform partners: ViewLift powering the digital platform; Synamedia PowerVu for distribution (February 29, 2024).

37% viewership lift — what drove it

The 2024-25 season produced a 37% year-over-year increase in Capitals viewership on MNMT, the network’s strongest single-season audience signal since the DTC launch. The combination of a recognizable team, multi-platform availability, and a network-branded subscription product has helped pull more of the fan base into MNMT’s owned experience, where the network can program, monetize and engage them directly.

1. A vertically integrated model

MSE’s ownership of the teams, the network, the venue and the app removes the friction common to traditional RSN structures — allowing for cleaner cross-promotion, better data flow, and faster product iteration.

2. Industry-first interactivity for women’s sports

In June 2025, MNMT launched Monumental Game Center, becoming the first local rights holder to offer integrated live sports betting and gamification for WNBA games via BetMGM and Play Anywhere — a product designed to deepen Mystics fan engagement and grow the women’s sports streaming audience.

3. Broader distribution and a price reset

On October 1, 2025, MNMT joined the DIRECTV MyHome Team lineup and reduced the annual DTC price to $179.99, expanding accessibility for Capitals, Wizards and Mystics fans across the DMV and giving the network a more competitive entry point against alternative streaming options.

“The 37% lift in Capitals viewership is what happens when a sports business owns the full stack — teams, network, app, venue — and then commits to a true direct-to-consumer streaming strategy. Monumental Sports Network’s DTC roadmap, from its 2023 launch to Game Center and the DIRECTV expansion, is one of the most coherent in regional sports today.”

What it signals for the rest of the RSN market

Monumental Sports Network’s trajectory is increasingly cited inside the industry as evidence that the right combination of ownership structure, DTC product, and continuous innovation — from sports betting integration to gamification — can lift live sports viewership materially, even in a market the size of the DMV. For other regional sports networks evaluating their own streaming roadmaps, MNMT offers an instructive blueprint.
